We Care for the Caregivers
During July, we showcased resources, services and gave thanks to caregivers at each of our properties. For many Fellowship House residents, they rely on a family member or caregiving agency to provide support for one or more activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing and cooking. We recognize the challenges that family caregivers face – balancing the needs of their own children, employment and life in general while also being a reliable and dependable aide to their aging parent.
For the past 13 years, the AARP Public Policy Institute publishes an annual State Scorecard on Long-Term Services and Supports to raise awareness of the needs of older adults and caregivers alike with a comparison across the states of successful programs, areas for improvement and opportunities for innovation. The 2023 Scorecard was released earlier this year and shows the latest rankings across five core criteria. Washington, DC ranks in the top tier of meeting or exceeding the needs for their older adult residents and caregivers; while Maryland is in Tier 2 and Virginia is in Tier 3 (with five Tiers in total).
Fellowship Square is proud of the work we do to support residents and their families. We hope through our community engagement and advocacy, along with the voices of the many other organizations like us in Maryland and Virginia, we will help to improve the rankings of these states and secure greater resources for our aging communities and those that care for them.
